The Ugly Side of Liberalism
There's a video store in my area, gay owned and operated... a sort of a Pa and Pa small business, and one of the few in Phoenix that offers a large selection of gay XXX-rated videos for rent. As it is both local and "family", I thought it would be a smart idea to approach the owner with a proposal to feature the upcoming BBJ Productions product at this popular store.
Before approaching the owner, whose business I have supported for several years, I decided to see what other bareback titles he was carrying. But upon looking throught the master adult video list I was quite surprised to see a glaring absence of bareback-content videos. Despite the popularity of bareback videos, not a single one was available among the hundreds of titles. I thought this odd, so I sent him an email asking why there were no bareback content videos in his store.
He never replied. So, when I ran into him in a cocktail line at one of our neighborhood nightclubs, I opted to bring up the subject. I told him I was now in the business of making porn, and wanted to know if he would be interested in carrying any future product. He smiled and said he would. But then, I told him that I hadn't seen any other titles from the bareback genre in his shop, and asked if that was an oversight or if the "oversight" was intentional.
The smile left his face, and he said that he intentionally didn't carry bareback videos. So I asked why. His reply was sincere, I believe, even though misguided. He said he believed that by carrying bareback videos he would be endorsing that kind of dangerous sexual behavior.
This isn't the first time I have heard this kind of excuse. There's a video shop in the Castro that also maintains the same policy for the same reason. And I'm certain that there are many gay-owned video shops country-wide that believe carrying bareback videos is tantamount to saying "We want all of our customers to go out and get AIDS". And at the first sound of it, this popular excuse sounds plausible. But it isn't. Not to this independent thinker.
Using that same 'logic', it could easily be argued that these video store proprietors fully endorse (and therefore encourage) violence, war, terrorism, and the fine art of blowing things up. Without knowing their complete inventories, I think it would be safe to say that at least half of any video store's selection involves somebody blowing something up, a murder, gunfire, or sexual impropriety. I mean, after all, that's almost the entire GNP of Hollywood these days, and violence is what sells tickets and videos. Then there are the movies that showcase adultery, teen sex, blackmail, white collar crime, drug abuse, kidnapping, auto theft, and a whole host of other criminal behavior.
So I find it interesting that these video purveyors willingly 'endorse' all of these undesirable and illegal behaviors by stocking their shelves full of such content, but they just can't bring themselves to endorse natural unprotected gay sex. Of course, there is also the matter of the straight adult videos also being carried with their noticeable lack of magically-appearing condoms... but I guess for the liberal faggot video store owner who has bought into the bullshit discussed in my previous Perspective ("Lessons in Human Behavior" ~ see Perspective Archives), straight raw video is excusable, but gay raw video is... well, something to protect the gay community from.
And here's where I have a problem with Liberals. There seems to be a deep-seated need among 'liberals' to protect one's fellow man from himself. What a complete crock of shit that is! Yes, I know, I'm beginning to sound like Rush Limbaugh with my 'down on Liberals' speech. But let me assure you that I am not a conservative either. Conservatives collectively present issues too great to tackle tastefully in this one column. For the record, I am an Independent. I have some conservative leanings as well as plenty of liberal ones. But I thank whoever is upstairs for endowing me with an independent mind. Okay, that and a big dick. Oh, and smarts and talent, too.
We've long heard the Liberal battle cry about protecting the children. Fuck kids. Because of both liberal and conservative standpoints on children, today's rug rats can't be punished, they go out and shoot up their schools, and their "protective rights" only serve to erode the rights we adults have lived long enough to supposedly attain. The Conservatives may be wreaking havoc on our Constitution, our schools, our healthcare system, and our economy, and they keep sending us to war at the merest suggestion, but the Liberals are fucking with our personal enjoyments and taxing us for the privilege. So fuck them too.
What probably started out as good-natured, selfless behavior on the part of Liberalism has over time transformed into a philosophy that assumes that each and every one of us is INCAPABLE of making sane decisions on our own, and therefore all of us lost and incapable individuals need someone else, someone Liberal, to tell us what is good for us and what is not good. And then, form a subgroup to protect us (at the taxpayer's expense, of course), and make us feel better about ourselves. In this manner, Liberals continually divide the pie of Humanity into smaller and smaller fractions. Eventually there will probably be more than 6 billion special interest groups in the world... one for each human being alive. And what will that have gotten us? Personally, I don't need a Liberal offering me the 'protection' of another subgroup to belong to in order to make me feel worthy. Neither should you.
When it comes to the Motion Picture Industry, Liberals apparently walk both sides of the fence. Sure, Conservatives push to have more 'family entertainment' with Christian values being shoved down our throats no matter how inappropriate. And thank God for the Liberals, who keep pumping out the movies that make Conservatives cringe and cover their children's eyes. But, while the Liberals are on one hand responsible for making the movies we love to see, they also feel it is their right and responsibility to shield us from watching them. I wonder why they can't make up their minds.
Surely no true, hard-line Conservative ever made a bareback video. And the Liberals, although they fight so we have the ability to make bareback videos, don't want you seeing them ~ albeit they DO permit us to watch "pre-condom" videos... as if that's somehow different. So where does that leave us?
Well, it leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth, that's for sure. So let me make a few solid points for the Liberals to take note of.
- Movies and television DO NOT turn us all into zombies bent on enacting the things we view. Every gay American over the age of 25 grew up in a nation of homosexuality-free television. The daily diet of heterosexual television and motion pictures did not and still does not make us hetero. Likewise, gay-oriented television will not turn a straight person into a flaming queen.
- You are not your brother's keeper. It is not your job as a Liberal to protect others from societal elements you do not agree with.
- Your fellow man IS capable of making informed decisions, whether or not they agree with your personal philosophies.
- Bleeding-heart Liberalism is just as ugly and unwarranted as Right-wing Conservatism.
- Special Interest Groups only serve to un-unite society
Another point should be made here... that of the aforementioned "pre-condom" video. This local video store, along with the fools at companies like Falcon and Catalina Video, think that there is some fundamental difference between pre-condom videos and modern bareback videos. The ONLY fundamental differrence is the difference in quality between the photographic equipment and film of earlier days, and the digital video of today. That's it. Period. But they treat gay video much like the politically correct view Step & Fetchit movies of the 1930's. While nobody would DARE make a movie in today's climate that portrayed negroes as "pickaninnies" or at best skitterish, wide-eyed, easily-spooked, illiterate train stewards and butlers, it is perfectly alright to call the movies that did portray black men in such a manner 60+ years ago "classics" suitable for family viewing.
Pre-condom videos ARE bareback videos. They're just older and grainier. But they still show men fucking each other without condoms. And yet, these oldies are considered more acceptable by modern AIDS-fearing audiences even though they show the same brand of "unsafe" sexual activity frowned upon by today's Politically Correct. To carry pre-condom videos in your shop while shunning the contemporary bareback genre is pure hipocrisy in its most ugly liberal form. To do so is to draw an imaginary distinction between the two ~ and to consequently buy into a spin fashioned by the large gayporn studios hoping to squeeze new money out of tired old work. Saddest yet is that the liberal gay adult video watching population buys equally into this imaginary-line bullshit, hook, line, and sinker. Pat yourselves on the back, boys! You've allowed yourselves to be suckered in by these crafty liberal liars!!!
Frankly, if you're a video store owner who is ballsy enough to carry pre-condom videos, then at least be equally ballsy enough to carry the newer, technologically better bareback videos and DVD's. Your market wants them. You're just cutting off your nose to spite your face... you know, the one with egg on it.
