Cheney's Blunder
It's been a slow season here at Barebackjack.com. We've done such a good job at getting the message out about safer unsafe sex, and we've succeeded in making "bareback" such a household word that there just isn't much raw sex scandal to write about these days.
But, just when I thought I may not have any new subjects for an editorial, good ol' Cheese-Dick Cheney opens his mouth and BINGO! I'm back in the editorial writing business again.
You see, our Vice Prez, that devil perched on the shoulder of our mentally-impaired Prez, just made a statement I believe was designed to sway some of the gay vote over to the Axis Of Evil [AOE ~ formerly known as the GOP]. He said that, as the parent of a lesbian daughter, he understands the special situation gays and lesbians are in. He also said he feels that gays and lesbians should have the right to form whatever kinds of relationships we want. And he said that he feels that the individual States should be the ones to determine which rights to allow gays (as if we don't deserve them all).
But then, in true Bush/Cheney fashion, the Whore of Halliburton continued by saying that he will support the President's move to amend the Constitution of the United States of America so as to build in anti-gay prejudice with the proposed ban on gay marriages. In other words, Cheese-Dick Cheney vowed to support legislation that would remove States' power in deciding the biggest right we can have ~ the fundamental right that would integrate us within the fabric of America's first-class citizenry.
The man giveth, and the man taketh away.
You'll notice that Cheesy Dick only panders to his daughter's community during election campaigns. In 2000, Cheney said he was in favor of the States making rulings on their own discrimination/anti-discrimination policies as pertains to marriages and civil unions. Then, once appointed Veep, Cheesy Dick flip-flopped and went in support of that pesky Constitutional Ban on gay marriage. And now he's flip-flopped again by hauling his sorely under-used P-FLAG membership card out of the closet, along with his campaign-time-only position of being somewhat in favor of gays having rights at the State level ~ well, sort of, anyway.
It is obvious that Cheney's insincere message, fashioned to look vaguely like the 'compassionate conservatism' the Bush/Cheney administration has espoused but never truly employed, is merely a scam designed to sway undecided gay and gay-friendly voters to his AOE party (formerly GOP) in these last weeks before the election. It's an old scam... grease the reluctant wheel with snaggle-toothed soothsaying. Present something that sounds like the words your constituents want to hear, without actually saying anything of meaning or substance. But unlike Baghdad Bush (the master of double-speak), Cheese-Dick Cheney's conservative compassion was just a little too
see-thru to have worked for him.
Interestingly, the remainder of the AOE party is at odds with Cheese-Dick's pro-gay sounding comments, and they have re-affirmed and strengthened their resolve against gay marriage AND civil unions and the rights they would provide. In these last few weeks, the AOE's true colors are beginning to bleed through their mask of compassion ~ albeit their true colors are limited to black and white, with emphasis on the white. Cheney uttered a few words that actually sounded for a scant moment like they had some compassion behind them and the AOE Party went ballistic in typical knee-jerk fashion.
Yes, these "compassionate conservatives" are now endorsing what the Associated Press calls "an uncompromising position against gay unions". They are now more committed than ever to supporting a constitutional amendment against us. So in his bid to try to weasel a few extra votes from the gay community, Cheese-Dick not only lost support of his party, he turned his party even moreso against the people he was attempting to court.
And this whole situation is beginning to (finally) alienate those modern-day Jews-For-Jesus, the Log Cabin Republicans, whose eyes have hopefully been opened to their party's prejudice once and for all. The GOP/AOE is making it clear: they do not want the gay vote. So what do you say we don't give it to them?
I mean, why should we reward false compassion? Why should we excuse such insincerity when their real goal, their real agenda is to deny us the same rights as they have? The gay vote is an important vote this year, and I am humored that Cheney's feeble attempt to gain our support through false empathy has backfired. For one thing, it's too little too late. After all, if Cheney actually HAD such feelings towards gay rights (or, one might counter, any feelings whatsoever), why did he wait four whole years to make them public? The answer is simple: he's whoring for votes.
Still, while I may chide ol' Cheese-Dick about his blatant insincerity, I also have to say something I never thought I would utter: Thank you, Dick Cheney. You see, it was his botched attempt at winning us over that forced his party to out itself and show the world that "compassionate conservatism", like so much else that has come from the Bush camp, is a lie. Republicans still embrace the mean-spiritedness this administration has tried so poorly to convince us they had shed. Thanks to Cheney and his gross miscalculations about how we could be won, the masks are finally off and we can see the Republicans for the vipers they truly are and have been all this time.
The wall has been put in place, and the country divided again by this gaggle of Fauntleroys, the leader of whom has falsely portrayed himself as a Great Uniter. Perhaps, ironically, he has lived up to that name, for he and his team have now united more of those who are gay and gay-frendly with John Kerry's camp than his own. We know who we're voting for, and it isn't Bush/Cheney. Not after this most recent spectacle.
When (or if) you watch the Republican National Convention, do a little trick that Rush Limbaugh used to tell his listeners to do with Clinton's State of the Union Addresses: tape a band of paper across the bottom of your television screen that reads: THEY LIE. That way you will remember not to believe anything those forked-tongue, glib, mean-spirited, win-at-any-cost bastards say. This week, Cheese-Dick Cheney inadvertently taught us that, no matter how prettily packaged the GOP/AOE may appear, nor how sugar-coated their visions of the future may seem, we will not be a part of that future if they win. And with Cheney's help, the AOE taught us that they themselves cannot be trusted. Let us not forget these valuable lessons over the next few weeks.
